Implement custom useClipboard() Hook in React

Frontend developers often need to work with clipboard functionality in web applications. In this blog post, we will explore how to implement a custom useClipboard() hook in React to easily handle copying content to the clipboard. This hook will encapsulate the logic required to interact with the clipboard API and provide a reusable solution for copying text.

Understanding the Clipboard API

The Clipboard API provides a way to programmatically interact with the system clipboard. It allows developers to read from and write to the clipboard using JavaScript. The two main methods we will focus on are document.execCommand('copy') for copying content and document.execCommand('paste') for pasting content.

Creating the useClipboard() Hook

Let's start by creating our custom useClipboard() hook in React. This hook will abstract the clipboard functionality and provide a simple interface for components to use.

const useClipboard = () => {
        const copyToClipboard = (text) => {
            navigator.clipboard.writeText(text)
                .then(() => {
                    console.log('Text copied to clipboard');
                })
                .catch((error) => {
                    console.error('Failed to copy text to clipboard:', error);
                });
        };

        return { copyToClipboard };
    };

    export default useClipboard;

In the code snippet above, we define a custom hook useClipboard() that exposes a copyToClipboard() function. This function takes a text parameter and uses the navigator.clipboard.writeText() method to copy the text to the clipboard. Any errors during the copy process are logged to the console.

Using the useClipboard() Hook in a Component

Now, let's see how we can use our custom useClipboard() hook in a React component to copy text to the clipboard.

import React from 'react';
    import useClipboard from './useClipboard';

    const CopyToClipboardButton = ({ text }) => {
        const { copyToClipboard } = useClipboard();

        const handleCopy = () => {
            copyToClipboard(text);
        };

        return (
            <button onClick={handleCopy}>Copy to Clipboard</button>
        );
    };

    export default CopyToClipboardButton;

In the example above, we import the useClipboard() hook and call the copyToClipboard() function when the button is clicked. This allows us to easily copy the specified text to the clipboard when the button is interacted with.
